Mount Shasta

Tree House

That's the name of the hotel I am in. Great lobby with a fireplace and nice stone walls. No view of Shasta because it's pissing cats and dogs. Luckily the weather was nice driving here yesterday, so no complaints from me.

Shasta Area

I remember from last year how beautiful the road through this area is. This is where the mountains start and the scenery is super. As a kid of five years old I was struck by the beauty of the Alpes when I drove through them with my parents on vacation. Why it probably also made an impact is the fact that Holland is as flat as a pancake.

Californian Highways

I just love it. Four lanes nice and wide. Overtaking is possible left and right and it is not a problem. Do that in Holland and you get a ticket. Now of course I am on vacation so there is no immediate rush and I am relaxed. But the moment I am back in Holland it feels a bit like driving in 'Dinky Toy' country.

Service

I said it before. America is a service oriented country. And I digg that. For example getting groceries. Do I like that? Hell no. Do I want to get groceries to be as practical as possible? Absolutely. So overhere you have 'Park & Ride'. Depending on the size of the city you see 'Park & Ride' next 5 exits. You end up at a huge complex with all kinds of stores. Parkings spaces all over and FREE. Shopping carts every other 20 rows. Very convenient. The stores are huge and will provide everything you need, be it food, hardware or whatever. Then you end up at the counter where your groceries are put in bags for you. Imagine asking in Holland at the person at the counter to pack your groceries. You will be arrested :-)

Everything Scales

Just like Rails. Isles in grocery stores are HUGE. One isle with only potato chips. I had to laugh. And we are talking 15 metres here. And you have that for 'chocolate chip' cookies as well. Getting a normal sized can of Red Bull is very difficult. Its double and even tripple. Insane. I had a double one yesterday and drunk it way to quickly. Felt my heart rate going up.

Portland here I come

This trip has been kickass and Railsconf still has to start. There are 300 miles to travel so it's breakfast and then US 5 North.
